“Some birds don’t dance at all, Stanley.” The Narrator brushed a knuckle across the little wooden cardinal's head, as if petting it. “Many species woo their mates with gifts.”
Stanley couldn’t help but blush and look away. “That’s all instinctual, though. Humans are more sophisticated than that. I mean, I’m not doing it just to get laid.”
“Yes, of course. Don’t misunderstand me.” The Narrator leaned in close, his breath ghosting against Stanley’s ear. “But don’t underestimate your own animality, my dear.”
Stanley shivered.
