Lo’ak’s breath comes in ragged gasps. “My legs—” he says, and the sound of it is small; it is an aching horror. “I can’t feel my legs.”
The sentence hits Jake like a physical blow.
A phantom ache at the base of his spine flares hot and immediate, bright enough to steal his breath. For a second he is no longer in the marui, no longer on Pandora, no longer blue-skinned and capable and a father.

There’s a long silence where his father doesn’t say anything.
“I know.” He takes a heavy breath. “But I don’t know how else to get through to him. He’s so stubborn and hardheaded-”
“Like you,” Mom admonishes.
Dad is quiet for a long stretch. Then: “Yeah,” he admits softly. “Like me.”
Something cold settles in the gap behind Lo’ak’s ribs, snatching his breath. He holds himself still.With the aftermath of his attempt hanging over his head, Lo'ak is struggling to keep himself afloat.

Summary
After the council turns on Payakan and Jake says the one thing he can never take back, Lo’ak finally breaks under the weight of everything he has been carrying: Neteyam’s death, his own survivor’s guilt, the ache of feeling like the family’s mistake, and the belief that no matter how hard he tries, he only ever brings ruin to the people he loves.
Kiri and Tsireya are too late.
In the aftermath, the Sullys are forced to bury a second son before they have even begun to survive the loss of the first, and Jake has to reckon with the damage he failed to see until it was irreversible. Somewhere beyond the reach of the living, Lo’ak finds Neteyam again—but even there, love cannot soften the truth of what has been left behind.
