How many times can someone watch the person they love leave before they break? Bucky has the bad habit of going away, and Steve... Steve’s bad habit is not telling people what’s on his mind. Instead, he lets it eat at him, swallowing his feelings because he can’t just ask Bucky to stay, and trying not to dwell too much on the fact that he might still be government property. After all, as long as Bucky is okay and Steve can do his job, it doesn’t really matter, does it?

As far as chirps go, it’s pretty banal. His tone is far more light and friendly than Scott usually hears from some of the other players— which makes sense. Hollander isn’t known for his shit-talking, in fact he’s known for his complete lack of on-ice antagonization. Hollander plays a very clean game, lets his skill on the ice stand for itself.
Scott should just make his own quick quip in response and skate off. Something that matches Hollander’s energy.
But Scott isn’t feeling very light, nor is he feeling particularly friendly.

Maybe if the video ended there, Shane thought, it would be okay. Okayish. Still incriminating. Still a fucking disaster. Still embarrassing, to have his breakup with this beautiful actress filmed and disseminated on Reddit of all fucking places, but not a nail in his coffin, burying him alive. But the video didn’t end there.
“Can I ask if you’ve ever been with another guy?” she had to ask.
And he, tears visible in his eyes, had to nod.
Just once. Just a single nod.
Why did he have to nod?
“Have you ever told anyone that before?” He shook his head. “Was it different? With a guy?”
“Of course.”

Shane turned to face Hayden and J.J., who were both looking at him with equally unimpressed expressions.
“Would you go if we didn’t bother you about it?” Hayden asked, raising an eyebrow. Shane flushed a little in embarrassment, choosing not to respond. Instead, he shoved past the both of them, leaving the locker room.
They both silently followed behind him as he (mortifyingly) started walking over to the office where the team doctor was set up. He came to a stop in front of the office. Stared at the door. His throat felt dry.
“It’s probably nothing.” Shane said weakly.
It was not nothing.
