It's not your fault you gotta hide like this.” Martin straightens his posture, lifting his arm with a tired grunt to grant Jon further access. “And, I'm sorry, but that actually is the deal. This is what I signed up for when I became a knight. It's what Lord Rayner and Sir Dekker have asked of me. Protecting you is my duty, and if I die in service of that, then I die. It's part of my oath.”

    With the wrapping secured, the room goes deathly still. Martin searches for more words of comfort, more ways to explain that this is what he's expected to do. What he's trained for. All he's ever been good for.
