Summary
This close, not even the darkness could obscure Denji's poor condition. His face was even paler than this morning, the sort of color that should only ever be seen in a hospital. His breathing was low and shallow. When Aki ran a hand over his head in a feather-light touch, his breathing hitched and a vicious growl sounded from his stomach.
That doctor had been full of bullshit. Something was wrong with Denji, and Aki would be damned if he was going to let it take him away.
"I'll find a way to fix this," he whispered.

Denji blinked. "I got Reze's organs transplanted into me and got turned into a ghoul," he offered. "Seems pretty straightforward to me."
"Yes, but that doesn't tell us how or why it happened." Quanxi leaned forward, resting her shoulders on the table and resting her chin on her clasped hands. "What I need to know is who decided to do this, why they did it, and exactly how they made it happen."
Denji nodded slowly as he tried to process what she was saying. "You mean the science behind the ghoulification?"
"Among other things."

His left eye looked the same as it ever had. His right was a nightmare of a red iris surrounded by black sclera, pulsing black veins spiderwebbing out from around it.
Denji took a step toward the mirror.
The ghoul stepped with him.
Three more steps brought him up to the sink. He grabbed its edges, allowed his head to drop down, and let out a hoarse laugh that was nearly a sob. His head was an aching mess, but one clear thought managed to break through the haze. Aki was going to kill him.
Literally.

Or; Denji is the sort of person who would usually be able to take being turned into a flesh-eating monster in stride. If only his brother weren't one of Tokyo's top ghoul killers.

“The fuck are you doing?” Kris hisses, fingers reaching out to latch at you before you could pull away. It’s the first time you’ve heard Kris swore. They must be really angry. Like Dad. “What are you, a child?”
At least there's no sign of anything like the hockey stick reappearing.
And hey, you're really mature for being eight! Not a child anymore, if you really thought about it. Just two more years and you’ll be in the double digits like an adult. Like Kris! But you didn’t want to lie to Kris. So you tuck away your complaints and pulse red in agreement.
In which the Soul is a child, and Kris finds out after it tries to comfort them at the end of Chapter Four.
