“Actually, Lucy, I should probably go downstairs for the night,” Lockwood says.
Her eyes snap towards him. “Why?”
“Because it’s getting late,” he says wryly. “But mostly because you are tempting every bit of self-control I possess at the moment. And I don’t want to do anything we aren’t ready for.”
Lucy starts to open her mouth to promise she’ll behave herself before she slams it shut, realizing that’s the opposite of what she wants to say. Unlike the other times she’s agreed that they need to slow down, tonight she doesn’t want to at all. A flush creeps up over her neck at the thought. She has to summon her bravery before she speaks.
“Lockwood, what if I want you to stay” —she swallows before continuing— “because there are things I want to do?”
She hears Lockwood’s breath catch in his throat, and his eyes are wide as he turns on his side to face her. “Then we can do those things,” he says immediately.
