Also called fool's laurel in the common parlance.
These markings, resembling tattoos, appear on an individual experiencing unrequited love. Simple marks featuring one to two plants may represent a shallow, immature love; marks of up to seven types of flora have been recorded indicating a very deep and often permanent attachment.
The markings usually begin at the base of the spine and spread across the skin until they are visible across the entire body, in the manner of a spreading garden. They will not fade until the bearer's romantic feelings have, or until they are reciprocated by the person(s) with whom the bearer is in love.
Certain cultural signifiers are attached to such marks when they grow beyond what can be hidden by clothing. They are often a source of pity; in some circles they may be regarded as a sign of emotional immaturity or an unpleasant personality. They have been the source of numerous scandals, especially when appearing on one partner in a marriage. There are a number of ballads on this topic....
