“Ilya, what are we gonna do?” Shane says.
Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.
“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.
Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.
They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper.He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. He figures Ilya would be pretty surprised if he showed up to his house out of the blue. Surprised enough to be put off, probably. Shane is way too bad of a liar to think of any plausible excuse. If this is really happening, if Shane is actually by some miracle getting another shot at this, then he’s going to have to play this smart. His impatience to see Ilya again will have to be tempered. He’s not sure how time travel works, but he has the sneaking suspicion that one wrong move could unravel everything.
Ilya is alive.
Just the thought of it is enough to make Shane crack his first smile in a year.

“Svetlana set me up on a blind date,” he responds, doesn’t bother lying. Curious to see what his reaction will be. “What are you doing here?” He throws back.
Shane’s eyebrows do something complicated. They’re interrupted by a knock on the door.
“Babe? You okay in there? You’ve been in there for a while,” a voice comes through.
“I’ll be right out, just washing my hands,” Shane responds stiffly. They hear footsteps walk away from the bathroom.
“Babe?” Ilya repeats. Watches as Shane’s cheeks turn pink again.
“That’s Jackson,” Shane states. “My boyfriend. It’s our one year anniversary.”
“Ah.” Is all Ilya can say. Tries to smile, “Congratulations.”

“That’s tomorrow, Rozanov,” Hollander says, smirking like Ilya might be fucking with him and he wants to make sure he’s in on the joke. He looks behind and around him. “Um, can I come inside?”
“Hollander, we have game today. You were here yesterday.”
Hollander is striding toward his kitchen, looking over his shoulder at Ilya like he’s getting tired of the joke. “Very funny. I was in Montreal yesterday, Rozanov.”
“Hollander.” Ilya goes to stand in front of him. Hollander’s eyes flicker up and down his body the way that Ilya usually craves, but is rather unwelcome right now. “Today is Thursday. Game is today. Yesterday, you came to my house. We ate tuna melts, watched Buffalo game. Then, you left.”
“Rozanov, it’s Wednesday morning. And I’ve never been to your house before.”
“Hollander…”
“Look at your phone if you don’t believe me.”
Ilya snorts like a bull and pulls his phone out of his pocket, swipes down on the screen to look at the date.
