Thanatos does not want to see Ares, because War is so cryptic and cruel. He asks for details about the deaths he doesn't cause, like a voyeur, thirsty to know whose blood is on whose blade and why. Zagreus might talk big about the things he slaughters in the Underworld, but not Thanatos. He doesn't want to excite Ares. Doesn't want him to get the wrong idea.
But Ares gets wrong ideas anyway.
