Summary
Three words engrained themselves into Mara Jade's psyche: kill Luke Skywalker. Every waking moment she thought of nothing else but to complete the mission the Emperor of the Galaxy entrusted her with. Yet time after time she has failed. By dumb luck, the last surviving Jedi has evaded her amethyst blade. But today, Mara has him. She knows his greatest weakness is his loyalty to his friends, which she plans to exploit. Mara has infiltrated Jabba's court posing as a naive dancer named Arica, looking for a career with the Max Rebo band. But instead, she finds a new occupation as a replacement for Jabba's former slave dancer, Oola. Despite the humiliating position, Mara keeps her mind focused on the mission. If degrading herself means getting close enough to kill Luke, so be it. Maybe then she can finally rest and not hear the Emperor's voice in her head day in and day out.
But when the time comes to kill the Jedi, the situation gets out of hand and Mara finds herself stranded in the deserts of Tatooine. Her only companion is the man she's supposed to kill. For the first time, Mara is conflicted. Does she complete her mission and find rest, or spare Luke and endure the Emperor's wrath?

Summary
Emperor Palpatine dies unexpectedly a year before the Death Star would be deemed operational. His heir apparent, Darth Vader, startles the galaxy by passing up the throne, and then passing it on to the newly-elected Senator of Alderaan, Leia Organa, after the Force leads him to directly to her. The new Empress inherits a terrorized galaxy, a broken Empire to tear down from the inside, and the weirdest second-in-command anyone can imagine.
Or, Vader accidentally hands the galaxy to his rebel daughter, Bail Organa panics professionally, Leia attempts not to get assassinated, and Palpatine rolls in his grave.
