Maynard tried to raise his paws in a placating gesture. “But a common enemy does not always make a friendship. I need you to swear you will not harm me if I release you; and that you’ll cut my bonds as well!”
The wildcat’s tail lashed. “What do you think I’m going to do, rob you while we’re both prisoners?”
No, the mouse thought, I think you might eat me. Aloud he merely pressed. “Do you swear?”
“Yes, fine, I swear,” her ears turned back menacingly. “Now you’d better come through with your end.”
Maynard nodded. “The word of a mouse of Redwall,” he said solemnly. “Is as solid as the red stone!”
Something about his words seemed to give her pause, and she stared at him for a pregnant moment. He couldn’t help but feel he was being measured somehow, and his life was going to depend on the result.
Luckily, the cat seemed to like what she saw. As she looked at him she cocked her head to one side, ears cocked the other way. “What’s your name, mouse?”
“Brother Maynard, at your service,” he made an abortive attempt to bow in spite of his trussed up state.
“Yes, it looks like you are,” there was an odd gleam in her feline eyes. “Very well Maynard the mouse, let’s hurry.”

“Well,” Sophie went stiff, as she felt his warm breath against the back of her neck. Good Lord, but the Shadowhunters could move quietly. She could practically feel his large, solid body an inch behind her. “I did rather enjoy that special delicacy you served me the other night.”
She only just stifled a gasp, her face reddening at the memory. She should have known better than to give in to him; one time became many times, with these privileged young men. “I have had a long day, Mr. Lightwood. I mean to be getting to bed soon.”
He was leaning against the desk, his strong arms on either side of her. “I am famished Miss Collins. I will not be long.”
