“We could have had so much,” Jay muttered, eyes still focused out his window across the bay.
“Yes, you very well could have.”
“But she’s not coming back, is she, old sport?”
“No, she’s not,” Nick said softly, as if his tone might spare Gatsby’s feelings.
Or: Gatsby doesn't from the gunshot, instead he becomes entirely Nicks problem and they both have weird repressed gay feelings about it. Gatsby's caught between a woman who he's chased so far he's not quite sure how to stop and a man who will has been and always will be waiting to help him catch his breath when he finally does manage to stop all this chasing. Who likes cardio anyways?

Summary
Have you ever read the Great Gatsby and wished things could have ended differently?
What if someone stopped Wilson and things didn't go as Tom planned?
What if Daisy had chosen differently?Time to stop wondering.
Nick saves Gatsby to find out an unexpected truth about the man he's just saved. Life will never be the same as they escape to California, not knowing their troubles would follow them. Daisy and Tom have their own dark sides that will be revealed and their daughter's life hangs in the balance between good and evil. Though the lines between them are blurred beyond comprehension. Wolfsheim will show that the art of being a con isn't the only thing he's good at. The past can not be repeated, but it's ghosts are still just as strong in the present.
