it's 1996, it's the arizona desert and it's hot. The Winchesters are leaving town tomorrow, and everyone in this shitty motel knows about it. Dean shares cigarettes that aren't his, Sam shares some secrets that aren't his either. John doesn't share his whisky. Overall, they've probably all had better nights.
A Bush era title for a Clinton era fic.

Sam's so damn happy to see Dean, he doesn't immediately recognize everything that's different about the man. Things that should have been as obvious as the weight, like the wounded, haunted look in his eyes, or the guilt in his voice when he says "Cas didn't make it." Or the hollowness in the humor he tries to wrap around "time flies when you're running for your life." Takes place within and between 8X01-8X03.

Quickly and clumsily, Dean pries off his boots and top layer. He climbs up to the head of the bed, and as he stretches, the back of his undershirt rides up. Skin pulls taught over sore muscles. There is a warm buzzing under Castiel's skin that he doesn't quite recognize. His fingers twitch, the sensation just out of reach.
Oh, he realizes. This is desire.

After losing his brother in the showdown at Stull Cemetery, Dean has gone into self-imposed exile. He's plagued by insomnia, and the only way he seems to get any sleep at all is when Castiel puts him out with a single touch. When this still doesn't prove enough to bring Dean any real relief from his grief and sleeplessness, Castiel wonders if what Dean really needs is another type of comfort altogether.

“Did you find it, yet?” His dad asked, his face swimming in Dean’s vision.
“Find...Find what?” Dean asked, his own voice sounding muffled to himself. The tilting of the world got more violent. Dean staggered to the side, catching himself on the wall by his shoulder. Something was wrong. Something was really wrong.
“Dean? Dean!” His dad was shouting. He saw his dad’s flashlight disappear and a hand was waving in front of Dean’s face. “What’s going on here?”
“I don’t—” Something was dripping from his nose. “I don’t know. My head—”
Dean gritted his teeth and bowed over, squeezing his eyes shut as he tried to alleviate the pain. God, it felt like his brain was inflating until it was too big for his head. He lifted his gun hand to his nose, wiping, and pulled back to see a dark stain on his hand.

Or, Dean's on a hunt with his dad when his brain gets scrambled by whatever they were after. When his dad begins to insist that the only way to kill the monster is for Dean to die, Dean doesn't even think to question it. But Dean puts off the inevitable to do one last thing—say goodbye to Sammy. Sam, as it turns out, does have questions.

There were dreams where Tommy never saved his family. Even before they were released, he dreamt they died. They hung and he didn’t stop it. He failed them. Their glassy eyes would watch him as they swung in the gallows, he himself trying desperately to fight to get to them, an invisible force holding him back, only to see the lever pulled. Sometimes, as they hung there, they reached out to him, telling him he should be hanging right alongside them. He agreed with the dead.
In these dreams, he felt haunted.
When the night came, it was not kind in its treatment of Tommy. Sometimes, he needs someone to help bring him back to the safety of daytime.
