    Summary

Taylor Hebert and half the cast have French last names. Taylor controls bugs. The story takes place in a coastal city, and an intense waterborne disaster is the catalyst for Act 2. Law enforcement is corrupt, Nazis run rampant in the streets, and the government is either helpless or self-serving.

Why is Worm set in the Northeast when New Orleans is 1500 miles south and already does everything that Brockton Bay does but better, backwards, and in heels?

A series of loosely-connected vignettes about Worm set in New Orleans. AKA A Little Worm in the Big Easy. Not to be taken seriously.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I don’t know enough about 90’s queer culture in NYC to have any authorityto judge whether this is accurate, but I CAN say that the setting feels deeply alive and lived-in and *real* in a way that, frankly, most real-world!AUs utterly fail at. This is the rare fic that can genuinely justify putting fantasy/sci world characters in a no-powers real-world AU, and that’s on the strength of the writing, characterization, and depiction of the setting. Easily my favorite depictions of Gideon and Harrow outside of canon, they’re both written so well! Both of them are given the opportunity to actually grow as characters and as people, outside of the restrictive environment they grew up in, over the course of a slowburn narrative that lets you actually sit in the events of their lives, and it’s amazing. They feel so authentically Gideon and Harrow despite the complete lack of most of the things that define them in canon. This fic also did the impressive job at selling me on all the non-Griddlehark relationships these characters get entangled in, which is quite a feat considering I didn’t expect any of them.

Dungeons are a litRPG trope, not an original world. The system, characters (other than those from Worm) and world are original creations.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Stellar worldbuilding, fantastic OCs, intriguing plot, plus creative & satisfying rules-lawering on Taylor's part—and holds up well on a re-read. This might be my single favorite original setting of any piece of narrative fiction I’ve read that originated in fandom-adjacent spaces. I reread much of the back half of this fic quite frequently and I desperately wish it was on AO3 so I could leave nice comments on all the chapters. In terms of crossover balance, it's at least 75-80% original worldbuilding with Taylor as the only worm element (in what's been published thus far, at least), but Taylor's history is still important in informing her interactions w/the OCs and the setting's power system

A unique, fantastic premise with a great execution and fascinating world building. My favorite snippet by this author and a strong contender for my favorite Worm one/two-shot. The second part is up on spacebattles on the author’s snippet threads, definitely go check it out
