First it was the fumbling with the lockpicks on the windows earlier, then the cat none of them had known existed, the glass ornamental vase it nudged over that alerted one of the guards, and now, this: a humiliating half-fall, half-leap out of a window he would’ve made easily if he wasn’t going on four days without sleep.
(Kaz decides he hates cats, officially and irrevocably.)
Inej has been gone for six months. Kaz stops sleeping, and the other crows decide to take initiative.

Kaz was out of town when the Komedie Brute decided to have audacity in spades.
Later, Wylan thought this was probably best. Giving the actors a grace period of about a week without having to worry about the presence of Kaz was probably a good thing.

“You have to die.”
Kaz blinked, unsure if the pain was muddling his mind. “What?”
“You have to fake your death,” Inej said, her eyes soft yet persistent. “You have to disappear. Go somewhere where they can’t find you until this all blows over.”
Silence stretched between them as what she was suggesting loomed in front of him. The burns on his right arm were still hot from the fires that turned the Slat to ash. He could feel the ash on his face, in his hair, in his lungs. He considered Inej’s words and realized they rang true.
“I know a place they won’t think to look.”
