He wipes his thumb across the edge of the podium instead. “If you need it packaged with a bow, call it focus. Anger is sloppy. If I was angry out there, there’d be body bags. You see any?” He doesn’t wait for an answer. “Didn’t think so.”

Every word lands like artillery. They love it. They love him.
But the burn in his wrist doesn’t fade. Under the gauntlet, his skin still crawls, hot and tight. He keeps flexing his fingers at his side, subtle, crushing the tremor into silence.

He doesn’t even realize he’s sobbing until he hears the sound — ragged, small, humiliating.
Masaru stands, looming tall again, looking down with that awful satisfaction. “That’s more like it,” he says. “That’s my boy.”

Summary
