untill one night he overhears the company talking about the war of the ring. upset that once again he's passed over in favor of fili and kili gimli takes it into his own hands and leaves a week before the boys. leading to gimli being the dwarf in the fellowship.

Summary
When you travel the lands of Men, you let them assume that you are male. It is just safer that way. The custom always served Gimli well. Until an elven prince fell in love with her male disguise, destroying any hope that he might love her real self.
Elven history is full of cautionary tales about unusual desires. If you love a mortal, you will suffer. If you lust after your cousin, you are probably going to betray your city to the orcs, soon. It is with great sorrow, therefore, that Legolas realizes, he has fallen in love with the dwarf introduced to him as Gimli, son of Gloin. A mortal, and worse yet, a male. What does that say about him as a person?
Aragorn, a Man who has lived among men for some time, is very well aware that lusting after a first cousin barely scratches the surface of perversions his fellow men are capable of. Falling in love with a male? Does that even count? As long as the men in question are not married to other people, he really cannot bring himself to care. Except Legolas' health is steadily worsening due to the guilt he is feeling, and something needs to be done.

Gimli had told him that once upon a sleepless night; a passing thing, a more well-known convention of the Dwarves compared to their pantheon of secrets. Legolas had paid it little mind then, for they were on the road and surrounded by root and grass anyhow, so he thought it mattered little.
The Elf cursed himself for that negligence now. It was not his way to hear the song of rock and jewel, but certainly he could see its instrument, for the ridges of the walls were like the strings of a famed Dwarven harp. And he wished so badly to hear its song.
