Summary
This year was already darkened by loss and funerals, yet now he needs to come back to the place of mourning with another purpose. His mother knew something when she bestowed this “caretaking” responsibility on the most anxious among her children for the time waiting for buyers to emerge. No matter how much he disliked the old house he couldn’t stay away from it for too long because of the nagging paranoid thought that something would happen. News in the countryside traveled fast and pretty much could reach people who could take advantage of his absence. He heard stories. He doesn’t want to take risks.
A stranger knocks on his door the other evening. He comes to his house with an awkward smile and a polite request to switch off the gable lantern at night, and at that Tyler’s distrust morphs into confusion.
He never switched the lantern on.
