    Whoever took this photo must have loved him very much to know exactly when to click the camera and capture Derek at his most peaceful.

    Avery traces his fingertips over Derek’s smile, closing his eyes and blocking out the sound of the celebrant finishing her opening words. He feels sick. He knows that he’s here for closure, to learn about Derek so that he can honour him, but he can’t bear the idea of being flooded with information about him in every eulogy if just the image of his face is enough to shallow his breaths and clam up his skin.

    And yet, he must accept the information. Like Derek did.

    Avery attends Derek's funeral, searching for closure, desperate to know who Derek was. What he finds instead is that Derek Hutchins touched the lives of so many people, and that he lives on through them and their outstretched hands.
