Phainon’s trip to retrieve a certain ring takes a dire turn when he’s kidnapped before he can even begin his search. With the villagers’ lives hanging in the balance, escape is too great a risk—so he chooses to bide his time, counting the days until his three-day break ends and someone inevitably comes looking.

Jax… knew that voice, though. It made all of the difference. He wanted her to say something else-- he needed her to say something else. He could hear his heartbeat in his ears. In the back of his mind, he could hear a jester-looking girl laughing at something stupid he said.

Only Phainon knew the truth. In the early days, distance and frustration had marked their friendship, a pattern broken only in moments of life and death or in the perilous theatre of battle. Having veiled his mind and heart, Mydei did not make it easy for others to know him.
But the gods are merciful, and the hero is far more persistent.
