“Oh- oh shit…” Robert dropped to his knees, crawling over him. That’s when he saw them: two bloody holes torn through Flambae’s shoulder and stomach. Bright red blood poured out like a river. Flambae had been shot. A spike of cold punched down Robert’s spine, even though the body under his hands radiated heat.
Or, Flambae took a bullet for Robert (actually, two bullets), despite claiming he’d never do that. They both end up learning a lot about themselves and each other afterward.

She, despite the cold gleam of the sun reflecting off her goggles, and despite the heavy barrels of the weapons she carried, had still been the woman he’d go to when he felt sick, or wanted a peanut butter and jelly sandwich but didn’t have the motivation to make it.
Or, Danny has complicated relationships with the adults in his life, and they only grow more so as his world changes, following the day his mother doesn't come to visit him in the hospital.
