There were words which sat on the tip of Lestat’s tongue, sentences that no longer had a cruel bite of resentment. Memories of times spent with Claudia, her hands fiddling across the Steinway, and his half-hearted reprimands. Months spent bundled up to brave the cold, her unruly hair peeking out of a knitted beanie, handcrafted by a local business. The skates they had fitted for her adolescent feet, the graceless way she took to the ice, flailing about. After months of schooling her in technique, and too-many hours spent rehearsing mediocre spins, she had amounted to something.
Claudia was brimming with potential, at the apex of her adolescent career, by the time Louis decided to forgo Lestat. To quit pursuing him in feeble faith that he might change. The topic lingered between them, intoxicating the air.
