“To them, it’s the equivalent of an oasis falling from the sky and landing in the middle of a desert. It can feed them for decades, and gosh, the microbes that can be found there. I would love to study a whale fall...if they weren't at the bottom of the ocean. Eugh.” He shudders dramatically. “If I never have to go in a submarine, I will die happy.”
Eva wonders if the whale died happy. Or, at least, happy to know its death would bring life to so many. Surely that was a comfort when faced with the end.

They set out from Katolis with the snow, winter seems to come back colder every year. Now it has the grip of ice, the shards of it that sit in their hearts. He rides out on the bay, Harrow on the dun. The horses steam in the cold winter air and the miles pass, and all the time Viren fixes his mind on Thunder. The black shadow of the dragon that has hung over them for so long, the storm that has burnt like electric fire in his dreams and consumed his waking hours. They are heading for the brink, and it is so close now, within his grasp. Years he has spent watching things fall slowly apart, and now he will fix it.

It takes him a few beats to understand what the red marker is advertising. And when it clicks, even though Jayce certainly isn’t the kind of guy to visit a glory hole, he checks his wristwatch anyway.

Jayce keeps the smile plastered on his face as his hand comes down on a button.
A jolt of pleasure hits Viktor deep in his core, sudden like a flood as he chokes on his words, nervous system lighting up, sweeping outwards from the center to his back and legs, toes — not paws — curling from the force.
"Good," Jayce says, eyes flickering to the monitor where it'd emitted a slew of frantic beeps.
Viktor nearly dies from an augmentation gone awry.
He wakes up and finds Jayce, who fixes his botched repairs and a little more beyond that.
