Summary
Nick and Alex are the last two awake after a gig at a nearly empty bar somewhere off the highway. The rest of the band crashes at a motel, but the two stay behind in the venue because the owner lets Alex hang out there as long as they lock up. They get high in the green room and start talking in the way people only do in the late hours of the night. At first, it's harmless, but the high starts sharpening weird details.
Alex notices Nick always plays the same nervous melody on the tabletops when he’s anxious. Nick realizes Alex changes his singing voice depending on who he wants approval from. Tiny observations turn intimate fast when they’ve spent years just inches from each other in vans, backstage rooms, and cheap hotels without ever fully saying what they mean.
Then the power cuts out in the venue.

Nick stared out toward Marsden Rock, standing dark against the crashing tide.
“In Germany,” he started quietly, “the sea is different. Colder. Grey all the time.” His eyes stayed fixed ahead. “When I was younger, my mum used to take me to the coast whenever my head got bad. Said the ocean made people feel small in a good way.”
