Summary
Penelope reached for the chair beside Diomedes, the wood gently scraping on the floor as she pulled it back. "And do not worry for your father either, he merely had something to attend to."
The entire room came to a halt, as though something had shattered in the air.
In front of him, Telemachus and Hermione had both frozen, the Princess' expression in confusion, Telemachus' hands tightening slowly at the table's ledge, something in his eyes shifting as he realized —
Penelope only stared. "What?"
Diomedes set his cup down. "Penelope —"
"Mother," Telemachus' cut in, his voice kept carefully neutral, but strung tight, too tight, like a rope that might tear if pulled any more taut, "Mother, he is not here."
(In the wake of seven years since King Odysseus' continued absence, the palace of Ithaca is wreaking in havoc).
(Or, essentially, Next to Normal).

She looks at the dead man. His hands are warm against her cheek.

He could imagine her upon it now. Perhaps she would be sitting upon the bed, or a kline, or relaxing in the balcony, bathing in the sun after weeks of being too weak to leave their bedchambers. Perhaps she would be feeding their son, or perhaps she would be playing with him, and, perhaps, when he opened the door, she would smile at him as she always had and would hold up their son and murmur your Papa’s here, love, look!
(After a tiring day at court, Odysseus returns to his wife and son).

Odysseus had loved to sail.
“Where are you?” She asked the waves, hoping that perhaps, wherever he was, he would hear.
There came no answer.
There never was.
And even then, Penelope had never really learned to stop talking to her ghosts.
(The four times she wrote him letters she did not send, the one time he read them all after his homecoming).

Summary
“The physician came in earlier,” Odysseus explained, helping her up slightly enough just so she could swallow, tipping the contents into her mouth. “He said you had a mild fever.”
Fever. Penelope resisted the urge to groan.
She had not fallen ill — well, physically ill — when her husband was away, yet now only a few weeks after his return she falls victim to a fever. A part of her wished to find amusement in the irony of it.
(Penelope falls ill. Penelope has fever dreams. They are not pleasant — hardly anything is pleasant when it comes to fevers, really. At the very least, Odysseus is there).
