Oscar grinned proudly at the praise. It wasn’t directed to him, but he felt proud, for Logan or something. Of course Logan was fast—he always had some sort of energy left after a long day of Algebra and Chemistry, still managing to be a lap quicker than Oscar in a 4 kilometre run, and still carrying enthusiasm in his voice as they dragged their feet to a nearby restaurant for dinner. His stamina was long and sharp, but he didn’t lose any speed with the amount of mileage he was doing. Oscar was thankful that he wasn’t in any mid-distance runs, because he’d be one of those runners blasting half digested burgers out of his system.
“I wonder why Carlos’ coach put him into mid distance.” The boy scoffs beside him. “Look at him, dying in fifth.”

He remembers the weight of it in his back pocket. He remembers straightening out his uniform, combing his fingers though his own hair before going to find him. He remembers the soft look Etho had given him, before taking it into his hands. He remembers the way he laughed as he unfolded it, correcting Joel's misspelling of 'Marry'. He remembers taking both of his hands into his, twin laughter and not quite understanding what being married meant. He remembers Etho pulling down his mask to smile, a gift just for him to see.
He doesn't remember his smile anymore.

Logan sits down at the long panel table, scooting his seat closer to the table.
“Today, we have the honour of presenting you with Logan Sargeant, quarterback for the Miami Dolphins”, here with us.” Logan shoves the hat onto his head, digging one of his fingernails under the tab of the can, cracking it open.

Yes, Seb had asked him to come work as a consultant at Kleinfelds a few years after he had retired and yes he had agreed to it. But admittedly he had not known that Seb had also asked Lewis to come work at Kleinfelds. Actually he hadn’t known for the first whole year of his job here. Because Sebastian Vettel was fucking insane and had them scheduled at opposite times so that they never crossed paths, until they did, and that was a day Nico would like to scrub from his memory.
But by that point he had gotten used to working alongside Seb and Jenson again, and having real friends and a purpose outside of eating food when he remembered to and sending a million emails a day. He wasn't going to give that up just because his best friend turned rival happened to work at the same place he did as a part of their mutual friend’s' drawn out scheme to get them to be friends again. That was insane. And he was a stubborn bitch.
