Summary
Simon’s face screws up in confusion as he tries to figure out exactly what the other’s words mean. He crams another quarter of the nutritional block in his mouth and chews as he mulls it over. He swallows and says, “What, do they want the one arm I have left or something?”
He means it as a joke, something to break the strange building tension in the room, but then Jack grimaces. “Well, they don’t want the one still attached.”
(Or: Simon gets his first glimpse of hope.)

Or: Simon's thoughts and relationships as he adjusts to his new normal.

Summary
“So then why?” Simon demands. “Why am I still in here?”
Ava doesn’t even bother reprimanding him for interrupting again. She takes a deep breath as if steeling herself for what she’s about to say. “We tried to pull you out.”
Simon’s heart freezes. “W-What?”
“We tried to pull you out,” Ava repeats, the words shaky and uncertain for once. “And we couldn’t."
(Or: 5 things the ocean takes from Simon and 1 thing Simon refuses to let go of)

Summary
He focuses on her voice over the pain and rapidly dwindling oxygen. It sounds like she’s walking as she speaks—he can hear her footsteps. She says he’s earned his freedom. More than that, he’s a hero. She tells him it’s a good day: for humanity, for him. He wants to believe her.
The footsteps stop. A moment of silence, and then—“Why isn’t he out yet?”
OR
Simon gets the data. True her word, Ava pulls him out. It’s not necessarily over after that.
