Summary
This is a stupid idea, and she knows it. Showing up unannounced at the Sharps’ door is catastrophically dumb, and will most likely result in her being blacklisted from any and all places, parties, and functions in high society for being a “predatory whore unabashedly determined to corrupt Roger and Virginia Sharp’s daughter.” Helen had told her in those exact words what people would say if she ever came to her house with the sole intention of seeing her outside of the designated hours.
It’s unfortunate, then, that she is currently perched beside the perfectly manicured garden outside the Sharps’ manor, leaning against the hood of her crumbling Honda, waiting for Helen to catch a glimpse of Madeline through the window.

It had all happened so fast. She had been so, so incredibly drunk. Well, drunk and hopped up on copious amounts of Molly. And cocaine. And probably the high she had gotten from yet another show opened and sold-out for the foreseeable future. And from finding out her mother finally tripped and broke her entire leg in the process (“penance,” Madeline called it).
Regardless of the circumstances, the main point is this: at some point, Madeline Ashton had snuck off to a corner of her yard and stripped. This, in and of itself, is not an issue; she has many nude photos of herself floating around, saved to Pinterest boards and regular corkboards by some creep in the woods of Missouri. The problem lies in who was with her.

Here, Madeline continues to learn with every man she whisks away from Helen—her name, something that burns the flesh behind her teeth when she says it—is a very unexciting place to be. Overrated, even. He is not soft, or passionate, or even pacing himself; his hands move as though he is trying to build a skyscraper before sunrise—though he is more accurately constructing the Tower of Babel—not like he is “making love,” or like he is invested in anything other than making himself come and maybe her, too, if he remembers how.

Summary
"You've got to be kidding me."
For a moment, the woman simply stares at Madeline in confusion, the slightest frown on her face, and Madeline thinks that perhaps she might have actually gone insane. That certainly is more plausible than meeting this woman again, a woman she shouldn’t even be able to recognize because she hasn’t actually met her, not her, not in this life.
But then the woman’s eyes widen, her shoulders sag, her mouth forms the most perfect o shape, her hand moves to point at Madeline like she’s some kind of freak in a circus.
“What the fuck are you doing here?”
And Madeline can’t help it, so she lets out a chuckle because of course that’s the first thing that comes out of this woman’s lips.
"It’s you,” Madeline says, and much to her horror, she sounds a lot fonder than she intends to.
Or: Much to their dismay, Madeline and Helen keep finding each other in every life.

Moments before your body experiences its worst trauma, you’re supposed to see your life flash before your eyes. Pivotal moments, intense emotional moments you’ve had with family and friends, loved ones. They’re supposed to replay in your head at warp speed, moving so quickly it can be hard to even begin to process. But it is nothing but a surge of brain activity meant to cushion your fall before your mind completely shuts down, forcing your organs and bodily functions to cease all activity as well.
Helen Sharp sees nothing when a truck is barreling towards her as she turns the wheel to get back onto her street. She doesn’t see anything when her car is hit violently on its side and flips three times over, skidding into a ditch filled with water. Her body is thrown around like a ragdoll, the seat belt constraining her as much as it can, failing to protect her head as it gets whacked into the steering wheel and the driver side window, cracking the glass. She hangs upside down, blood draining from her limbs straight to her head.
