Akira keeps seeing Akechi in the crowd. Akira keeps dreaming about Akechi. Akira’s pretty sure it’s not just his mind playing tricks on him. And he’s pretty sure that his would-be murderer and sort-of friend needs his help.
Even if that means diving into a lingering fragment of the Metaverse where Akechi is trapped in a hell of his own making. They say “abandon all hope”, don’t they? Akira has a lot of hope to go around, and he’s never known when to quit.

Loki knew what he had to do. He had the tesseract in his pocket dimension, and only he could access it. So, what was the one way to seal it off by killing himself? He hated the idea of dying for real this time; it was so easy the first time, but now he had everything he ever wanted, and it was going to be taken away. He looked Thanos in the eye, stuck out his hand, and summoned a knife, driving straight into his neck.
Loki tries to kill himself to keep the tesseract away from Thanos, and it doesn't work

Summary
Some stories end with a fall. This one begins with two. The soldier with the star-spangled shield became a weapon for the other side; decades later, the false prince fell from the sky and became their experiment. The soldier and the prince were never supposed to meet.
Or, the AU where Steve is the Winter Soldier and Loki’s a HYDRA guinea pig, and things are generally awful. Series title is from "Winter Bones" by Stars, which is particularly relevant for the end of the second fic and after.
