“Why are you smiling like that?” Sage asked initially, straightening the wide, green sweater she had put on before leaving the room.
"I'm just glad to see you," she replied, shrugging her shoulders.
As if it was the most normal thing Reyna could do. Like it was an everyday thing she did and was the best performer.
But it was true. She was happy to see Sage. Maybe too much for what happened a moment earlier.

Sage nearly dropped the cup in her hands as quickly as she looked up at Reyna.
"What?"
Reyna grinned and sauntered past Sage.
"I've told you before, corazón: we're the perfect pair."OR: After a failed mission, Sage realizes how dark and monotonous her days at the Protocol have become. Although the two agents have never developed more than a strict working relationship, she talks to Reyna about it, and Reyna surprisingly tries to help. What Sage doesn't realize is that soon after, Reyna will be the one to light up her life again as the two women get to know each other better.

She finds out that the other protagonist is none other than Reyna Mondragón, a famous star at the peak of her career, known as a difficult person to work with. She's gonna find that this fame is not going to be a problem, because Reyna loves working with Sage. Thinking herself straight, Sage finds out she also loves working with Reyna. Maybe too much.
But Reyna is not an easy person, and she doesn't have an easy past.
They are not a perfect pair when they meet. They have to learn to grow into it.

Summary
After narrowly surviving what should have been a routine mission, Sage endures a painful recovery in the care of Reyna and Neon. She returns to the front lines, fully-recovered, but finds inadequacies in her current abilities. Reyna takes her under her wing, helps her unlock new abilities, and teaches her hard lessons. At first, Sage hesitates, but Reyna forces her to question her beliefs and address the underlying problems. Ultimately, Sage unlocks a part of herself that she buried long ago, and finds that she and The Empress aren't so different after all.
