He flips the TV on to the local news, pausing as the headline story comes on: “Pedophile Preacher on Trial.”
The news claims that it is blurring the sketch of the witness out of deference for their age, which makes Joel roll his eyes. If they are deferring to the kid’s age, they shouldn’t be showing any sort of courtroom sketch. Too many things can be discerned from the minor details, he thinks as he looks at the sketch on the screen despite himself. It depicts a kid in a red t-shirt, palm trees cut out of a sun…
He knows that shirt. Ellie left the house in it this morning.

Summary
Joel’s plumb out of luck, it seems, because running after the dog is the little girl. She’s out of breath, still halfway laughing, and for a few seconds she doesn’t notice him. In those seconds, her face is wide open in a grin, dark hair wild and posture loose. She can’t be more than thirteen, maybe a small fourteen, and she’s clumsy in the way teenagers are right after a growth spurt. There’s a knife in Joel’s chest, the one that’s been there for twenty years, and it twists.
(or, joel accidentally gets a dog. apparently, the dog comes with a mouthy fourteen-year-old kid, and maybe also a reason for living again.)

“There’s no way there’s a real difference between Siberian and Sumatran,” Ellie finally decides. “Stripes are stripes.” She gasps suddenly, clearly struck with an idea. “Hey, Joel: why do tigers have stripes?”
He barely finishes rolling his eyes when a voice beside them interjects. “It’s a Bengal.”
Joel's eyes flicker to the owner of the voice behind him. Off the bat, he doesn’t notice anything particularly strange - but it doesn't matter what he thinks.
Because all the color has drained from Ellie's face.
“David.” Her voice is quiet, but he hears the subdued rage. “What are you doing here?”
or;
Ellie's son JJ is becoming fast friends with Joel's niece. But an outing to the zoo proves to be a little disastrous with an unwelcomed guest. The first time, Joel promises not to swing on him. He makes no promises on the second.
