Wukong didn't know how exactly it started.
Ao Lie calls them Blinks. Episodes where he would blink and realize a long time has passed or that he was in another location.He has... gaps in his memories. Something that never really bothered him to begin with, after all, there's not much you can do stuck in a rock. It was when he started the Journey that he realized something was truly wrong.
