The realization hit Phil with no warning, a little before midnight, as he passed through the corridor and got a glimpse of Dan’s open suitcase next to the closet. It was funny, in a way — he’d been telling Dan to start packing for the past week, as he was prone to do, while Dan kept saying he was going to get to it, like he always did, a familiar enough argument whenever they had to leave anywhere, except this time, Phil wasn’t packing anything at all. Because Phil was staying home. Because Phil was going to stay at home, alone, for two months and a half.

Three days ago he’d left. And he still hadn’t come back. Did that make it officially the worst they’d ever been? [...] Was it Phil’s fault for still being on a beach miles and miles away from home after three whole days of misery, or was it Dan’s for still being quiet the way he’d never, ever been, in any of their previous fights?
Come back, Phil wanted to text, nonsensically. I can’t think when you’re away, just come back already.
But that wasn’t what the person who left could say.(For the first time in their relationship, it's Phil who walks away after an argument. He doesn't cope very well.)

Phil grabbed Dan by the sleeve, pulling him closer; Dan’s eyes fell on his lips but he didn’t move, just breathed and waited, because that was the whole point of the game — they were going to do what Phil wanted, which really was what Dan wanted —
“Because you adore me?” he pushed in a sing-song voice, grinning wide.

Summary
I understand your concern, but I don’t think we have anything to worry about here. As a hoax, or a prank, or dark satire or whatever, the video is pretty effective, and I can see why you’ve reacted so strongly. But I think it’s a mistake to take this thing at face value. Simply put - the idea that Howell would post it, if it were genuine, is nuts.
Dan and Phil return from a seven-year hiatus with a very different kind of hard launch.
