He slows to a stop. for a second and looks down at her. All of a sudden, the night air rustling in the roses is all she can hear. His breath hitches as the silence settles between them. His eyes, green and pale, glinted in the moonlight. For a moment, the whole world felt far away.
“You should keep it.” He says, his gaze shifting away, “...My coat, I mean.”
“Why?”
“You’ll need it for the trip home tonight, and so, uh,” His ears flush as he clears his throat. “And that way I have a reason to come see you on Monday.”
Lucia laughs, genuine and warm. “Cardinal, you don’t need a reason to come see me.” She looks up to the sky as they walk. The scent of him on the coat and roses fills the air. “If I'm being honest, I could use the company.”
“You should join us again next week, then. I will look forward to it.” He gives her that damned soft smile of his.
