Ilya blinks. “Shane. Are you trying to tell me that I will not like something because it is ‘boring’? I think we have plenty of evidence that this is simply not true, no?”
Shane fixes him with his most withering glare. “Well, if I’m calling something boring, imagine how boring it actually is.”
“I know you are trying to trick me, Hollander,” Ilya states, raising a single brow. “But you will not deny me my right as your husband to see baby Shane in his tiny little skates.”
Or: Shane and Ilya watch some of Shane’s old home movies. It leads to a few revelations.

Summary
Ilya has heard people say that suicide is a selfish act. He's heard people say it about his mother, and it used to make him furious. He’d punched Alexei for it, once, broken his nose when he said, why are you still moping over that selfish bitch, she left us without a thought, even though he knew it was his brother’s grief speaking and not his heart.
That word, selfish, made him so furious, maybe, because some small part of him believed it. Some part of himself, a part of him that he was too ashamed of to acknowledge, let alone to name, believed that his mother should have been braver. Should have been stronger. Should have fought harder to stay with him, to keep taking care of him. Would have, if she’d loved Ilya as much as she claimed to.
He knows now, now that he has Shane, that it isn’t true. He knows it is possible to love someone entirely, completely, with the purest and truest love, and for life to still be unbearable.

Each moment felt as if they were running from one place to the next. Chasing feelings they barely knew the names of and grasping at gaps in time. Holding on to them and fitting them into the most unlikely of places. They had an hour at this hotel, a single week at Ilya's apartment, a long weekend at Shane’s cottage. Each meeting was ephemeral, just as their relationship was proving to be.
Just as Shane Hollander was proving to be.
OR Shane and Ilya discover just how prominent gun violence can be in spaces with large crowds.
