Officer Wickham snapped to attention, face turning red as the words finally spilled out of them. “During a routine patrol, we found your daughters in one of the former mining districts - a dangerous and restricted area - operating experimental tech without proper licensing.”
A gale of various emotions raced through Caitlyn simultaneously, nearly taking her off her feet with the force of it all. The first concern managed its way out first. “Are they alright?”
Wickham nodded quickly. “No injuries, Ma’am. But they are being detained now at the station. I’m sorry, of course, but it’s protocol no matter who - ,”
Caitlyn shook her head, cutting him off as she squeezed her eye shut and pinched the bridge of her nose. Of course asking the two of them to behave themselves with total freedom to escape the manor had been too hefty of a request. And of course they would have picked the most dangerous way to completely ignore said request. And of course it was the fucking hoverboards --

Maddie looked around the carnage, pulling a handkerchief out and delicately holding it to her nose. “No teeth marks,” she mused, “the animal didn’t feed. That’s curious.”
As the men with her fanned out to obey her instruction, Maddie grabbed one by the bicep. “Back to the capitol building with you - we must double the guard on Ambessa and her inner sanctum. Until further notice, we’re on high alert.”
“At once, Commander.”
As he rushed back to the gondola, and Maddie looked around the carnage one final time, her handkerchief over her nose to block the stench. She looked, and she debated, and she sighed lightly.
“The prodigal daughter returns,” she murmured.

“Have any of you seen combat?” she dares to ask. It was the first question she wanted to ask the moment she entered the room, the answer already clear in the nuisance of their house banners flooding the throne room, decorative feathers and jewels hanging from all of them. Peacocks among wolves.
They all stare at her with red stained cheeks. “Real combat,” Caitlyn clarifies when one of the knights begins to step forward, his stature of someone who’s barely seen the sun outside of a brothel. He steps back only for the nameless knight to take a step forward.
Caitlyn doesn’t recall closing the distance, something in the knight acting as a siren call to the princess. “You,” Caitlyn states simply. It isn’t a judgement or an accusation. But remembrance. The way her gloved fingers felt when taking the favor from Caitlyn’s hands, her helmet still hiding the whole of her face.
“The one and only, Princess” she quips quietly. She doesn’t bow her head as the others had when she met them at eye level. No. This knight raises her chin. Not in defiance but in something Caitlyn can only describe as a challenging reverence.
I dare you to choose me as I am.
