Louis blinks his eyes open, his eyelids fluttering as the room swims around him. He takes several gulps of beer once he confirms that he’s definitely not hallucinating, that the very first portrait Harry Styles ever painted of him is hanging on that wall.
Louis stares at the wall, his heart jackrabbiting in his chest as he realizes that there’s not just one painting of him, there’s five, the portraits lined up like they’re some sort of storyboard depicting the rise and fall of his deepest love. The captain looked back at Louis, and for a second their eyes met. Up close, his were an even colder green than they had seemed from across the deck, sharp and unreadable beneath the crossing scar. Louis had just enough time to think that trying to look harmless was probably worth the effort.
Then the captain said, flat as anything, “Throw him overboard.”
The words hit Louis like a blow and for a heartbeat, nothing happened. The crew stood shocked in the sudden quiet, boots shifting uneasily against the wet planks.
“EXCUSE ME?!” Louis snapped, outrage shooting through him so fast it burned straight past caution.
Or- Louis always knew he was different. Mostly because normal people do not make the sky lose its mind every time they have a strong feeling.
Then his father betrays him to the king, the royal guards come knocking, and Louis runs for his life, only to accidentally end up on a pirate ship, because apparently things can always get worse. Now he’s stuck with a crew of chaotic alphas who think hygiene is negotiable, a scarred captain with a personality to match, and the growing suspicion that the royal dungeon might actually have been the less stressful option.

That simple opening phrase, that short introductory acknowledgement that is often rushed out so easily, painlessly, at a safe distance. Giving a doctor the ability to portray empathy without true emotion, without feeling the full brunt and sheer force of the underlying pain itself.
But Louis feels it, he feels the crushing agony laced behind the phrase, he feels the weight of the painful words slipping from his lips, the cause and effect that the three-word expression holds. The distantly empty “I’m so sorry” that doctors throw out in self-preservation, isn’t at all empty for him. Louis recognizes it, he understands it, he feels it.

“Right,” Harry slowly drawled out as if he was talking to a toddler, “Which would make that mine.”
“Look, I really don’t have time for this, I’m running late. And this,” he said before he took a sip from the cup, “Is mine.”
Harry’s jaw dropped and he held his hands out, failing them slightly, “Wha-you can’t just drink it!”
“Well I did, so, do you still want it or can I be on my way?” The man challenged.
Harry shook his head disbelievingly, “Take it, but for the record, it says Harry on it.”
The man turned the cup around and a sharp laugh came out of his mouth, “Well, shit.” He looked at Harry, a smile stretched across his face as crinkles formed next to his eyes. “Thanks, Harry.”

The low rumble of the kettle boiling sounds just as the person shifts his broad shoulders around to face Louis, his scent hitting the omega like a hurricane wind, knocking his heart into his stomach.
