She’ll be gone after today. Off to university, and once she has a degree, she’ll never be coming back. Tabitha was taking over the mines, that’s what Agnes had said. She had no reason to stay. The only person with a degree who came back was his mother, and he didn’t even know why. It was hard to get a straight answer out of the woman; she never talked about the time before he was born.
What if she stayed for me?
Vivan Scarlet never got out of the Holler, raising her daughter until her untimely death. Agnes, growing up partially raised by her mother and partly by her Aunt, took the first opportunity out of Scarlet Hollow with a one-way ticket to college. Still, when her aunt dies, and Agnes returns to the town, she can no longer run away from the cage she grew up in, the mystery of her mother's death and the feelings she'd been ignoring since she'd left.
