    “Hey cuz!” a girl’s bright voice chirped directly into Jolyne’s ear. She jerked away in shock so dramatically that she bumped into Hermes, sitting on her other side, and whipped around to see who’d addressed her.

    There was nobody there, just an empty seat at one of the long prison caf tables. Hermes was looking at her with an air of vaguely amused concern.

    Then, as she watched, a girl faded into existence out of thin air, leaning nonchalantly on the table.
