** MAJOR EDITS of Ch 12-19 posted 6/30/26! Please read edits to understand the fic going forward!
Does Shane Hollander have an asthma diagnosis? Technically, yes. But it never comes up anymore and it’s so unimportant that his team doesn’t know. He’s only had two flare-ups since joining the Montreal Metros a decade ago and never in front of them. Only his parents and Ilya know and only Ilya is really worried about it (because of course he is).
But when it comes back with a vengeance, derailing his health, life, and career, how will he manage to keep the people he loves in his life?

Summary
Once the glow of the cottage fades and the boys have to head back to the real world, they have to start the long difficult year being separated before Ilya signs with Ottawa. Or at least that was the plan, until Ilya opened his mouth and accidentally got himself traded to Montreal. But it’s fine, just one year for Ilya in Montreal and then their 10 year plan is back on track… Right?
Through their year on the same team, Ilya helps Shane come to terms with the fact that his team kinda sucks, Hayden gets chirped into oblivion but still realizes that maybe Ilya Rozanov isn’t nearly as bad of a guy as he thought, and Hollanov come to terms with a new question they didn’t expect to ask.
Now that they’ve gotten a taste of living together and being on the same team, how are they ever going to give it up?

Summary
In another timeline, Shane and Ilya hook up in room 1410, nothing goes wrong, and everything plays out exactly as we know it.
In this one, Yuna Hollander walks in before Ilya can leave—and the seven-year situationship never gets the chance to start. Instead, through the power of miscommunication, Shane and Ilya start dating in 2010. With better support, they make better decisions. Their rivalry fizzles out before it ever has the chance to fully ignite, replaced instead by a beloved “bromance". In 2015, they come out to the NHL and the world.
No one believes them.
Or: Somehow, despite Shane and Ilya being out for two years, Scott Hunter is still considered the first openly gay player in the NHL, much to Ilya’s horror.

Summary
The Metros were fine with hiring for diversity but they don’t want him to be the highest paid player on their team. This leads to Shane to think the Metros aren’t where he will be his entire career.
Svetlana knows Ilya, him deciding to come to the NHL, means he wants out of Russia even if it isn’t right away and forces him to apply for a green card.
