His mum held Nathaniel down as she let the chemicals soak into his eyes.
It burned, different to how his shoulder did when father pressed the iron to it years ago. His shoulder had burnt with a searing heat that he could not escape; bright and all encompassing. Afterwards it felt like pulsing coals against his skin; a never-ending throb of burning pain that pulled and demanded his attention. Nathaniel had grown used to pain over the years.
