Summary

Suddenly, Sephiroth understood, saw through Hojo’s words to the pain beneath. And he felt a pang of sympathy before the memory of years of torture, culminating in hopeless, agony-filled darkness, drove it away. There was no one less deserving of sympathy than the monster in front of him.
He turned back to Hojo, held his gaze as he spoke, his own burning with the fire Hojo always seemed to stoke within him. “Love saved me.”
Sephiroth decides to confront Hojo in Junon after all, before he's put to death. The answers he gets about his mother start him on a journey to find her.

“Are you sure about this?” Zack asks as he looks at Sephiroth in the kitchen.
“Yes,” Sephiroth says. Zack squints at him. But is it true? Sephiroth doesn’t lie but it’s impossible to know what he is thinking. Sephiroth should be the one waffling here, not Zack.
“’cause I was just kidding when I mentioned this.”
That earns a flicker of a smile. “I know.”
Here’s the thing about Sephiroth. He takes jokes seriously and the serious things as jokes. Say “when pigs fly” and he’ll ask how. Say “100 people died” and he’ll chuckle and ask who this time. Total wack sense of humor.
So why did he like this guy?
