Summary
In any other circumstance, he might laugh, but all he can do now is stare. There’s hardly a shortage of good things left in the world; he feels them in the soft curves of each pristine petal the stranger places onto his palm, sees them in the full spread of the flower forever frozen in its greatest moment. He could hike up a mountain and drink in the sight of breathtaking scenery, open a book to peruse the most melodic prose, or even just gaze into this stranger’s single sparkling black eye for the next several centuries and that alone would provide an endless supply of good to the world.
(But what good is he?)
And so Xie Lian says, and with all the resignation of a man who long ago lost everything, “I'm not meant to have good things.”
To this the stranger replies, with all the conviction of a man who has nothing left to lose, “It would be my honor to prove you wrong.”
