Ilya is married. He is married to Shane and has Shane in their bed and their house every day. He has Shane as a part of his life more fully than he ever has. People know about them. He holds Shane's hand in the grocery store without Shane pulling away. They are on the same team, getting ready to share the ice for a whole season.
Ilya has everything he'd been longing for over the past four years. Maybe longer. Probably longer.
Ilya has a hole in his chest. The edges push aside his heart and lungs, digging up under his ribs so everything feels tight and cramped while the core of his being vacillates between aching and emptiness.
In which Ilya collects pills, distracts Shane, and has a great time doing it.

Summary
"Do you know how long it's been since I heard from Alexei?" Ilya asks, as Shane walks into the kitchen and opens the fridge.
"Huh?"
Ilya shakes his phone at Shane. "I was thinking it's been a while since I heard from him, so I was looking through my call log and I can't find anything in the past few months." Shane looks at him with a mix of confusion and horror. He puts his hands up in mock defense. "Don't worry, don't worry. I'm not going to call him, but the longer he goes silent the worse it usually is when he pops back up."
"Ilya." Shane abandons his search for food to stand directly in front of him. "You haven't talked to Alexei in literal decades."
Ilya is diagnosed with dementia and opts for medical assistance in dying rather than letting the disease take over. He and Shane say goodbye.

“You want to talk to people about me?” Shane asked quietly.
There was something small and confused in the question. But Ilya was still furious and raw.
“Well I would,” he sneered, “if there was anything about you that was fucking interesting to talk about! It would be nice to not be so fucking bored and miserable!”
The second the words left his mouth, he watched the pain roll across Shane's features like a thousand fractures shattering through glass.
Ilya had seen Shane nearly break ribs. He had seen him miss game-winning shots, take hits that left bruises blooming purple and black across his skin. He had never seen this.
Shane closed his eyes for a long moment. He shook his head slightly, a tiny movement, then nodded once as if agreeing with something only he could hear. His face twisted briefly with a fresh wave of pain before he forced it to still.

What if Shane and Ilya don't make up so easily after the Boxing Day fight? The Centaur's plane never malfunctions, so Shane never proposes. Instead, Ilya gives him an ultimatum on coming out and going public. It backfires spectacularly.
