Summary
Buck’s hair is gray at the temples, buzzed neatly on the sides and a bit longer and curlier on top than Chris remembers him wearing it, and there’s a new scar through one of his eyebrows. He looks good, like he’s living a happy life, and the only possible reason Chris can imagine for Buck to be here at Helena Diaz’s funeral in El Paso is that Chris’s father brought him.
“Why would you come?” Chris snaps at him.
Buck blinks. “Why wouldn’t I come?”
“She didn’t mean anything to you.”
“I’m not here for her,” Buck scoffs. “She is dead. I’m here for him.”
or
Chris is forced to grapple with the choice he made eleven years ago when his father comes back for Helena’s funeral.

Summary
“Hmm,” Buck hums, and Eddie feels the vibration of it under his mouth. Buck’s nose nudges against the side of his head. “Have you thought about that?”
Eddie laughs against Buck’s shoulder, unwilling to lift his head. “Thinking? Right now?”
“Shut up,” fingers dig into his ribs, “I mean, would you want to? Be married again?”

Summary
“It’s just that—I died,” Buck continues, voice unsteady enough that Eddie wonders if this is the first time he’s acknowledged that out loud. “I died, and there’s so much more. There’s so much more I want to do, things I don’t even know I want to do yet, and I almost had the chance to have and live them taken away. I don’t want to die and regret missing out on everything else, Eddie.”
“So let’s make a list,” Eddie says. “Let’s do them.”
or, a bucket list that’s really about buck needing to make a change and an eddie who’s ready to do anything to see him fall in love with life again. it takes some crossing off for eddie to realise—the thing at the top of the list in his own heart? it’s been right here all along

Summary
“You’re gonna have a good time once you’re there,” Buck continues, and Eddie knows he’s right— knows that any time spent with Hen is enjoyable; that Karen, though he hasn’t hung out with her in this capacity before, is a delight; that he could really use a distraction from the misery that is his life.
Right now, though, Eddie wants to curl into a ball, tuck himself underneath the passenger seat, and decompose right into the Jeep’s recently-refurbished car flooring.
That wouldn’t be fair to Buck, though.
Lately, Eddie’s felt like his entire existence has been unfair to Buck.
Five new things Eddie learns about himself in Christopher’s absence, and one thing he rediscovers.
