Adored. Great angst, with what I personally find to be a great portrayal of mental and psychological deterioration that is well-paced, well-executed and, frankly, quite impactful. I'm not one who experiences physical reactions when interacting with intense subject matter, and despite this, the descriptions of Caine at the last major segment of Misery Meat had me feeling physically ill.
Speaking of Caine, god he is written so well, simply in general. From the way he speaks down to his little mannerisms, and his inner thoughts. His point of view really makes the fic for me. The degradation and decline; the slow loss of his identity as he starts viewing himself as merely a thing to be torn into, cut open, destroyed; the fear and panic that he feels at the thought of being hurt whilst at the same time craving and subjecting himself to it... Even higher praises for one aspect in particular, and that is the anger. He gets angry at the humans, he gets upset. But, fuck, he always tells himself that he's not allowed to feel those things, that this is his fault and he deserves all of it. Even when you believe that you're at fault in an abusive situation, there are still moments when you rage about how you're being mistreated. And sometimes you are the one to shame yourself for feeling that way. Seeing Caine feel such a, heh, human thing was equal parts heart-wrenching and validating. Him experiencing those moments where he's rightfully upset about what's happening to him makes this feel so much more real, like these are the thoughts of a real living person and not a written character.
The fic also brings out some really interesting ideas with a lot of potential, like Caine's relationship with the abstracteds and specifically Queenie, how said abstracteds think and behave, Caine's code injecting him with an artificial high every time he perceives he's done a good job... I would love to see Queenie utilized more, though that's just a personal preference. The rest of the main cast are also written well after the initial suspension of disbelief, which is not a criticism, it's simply par for the course with fics that deviate from the canon.
I especially love that Kinger feels guilt for the situation, because although he is by far the best one out of the humans, he is still very much at fault and in the wrong. Sure, he'd sabotage the others and give words of concern to Caine every once in a while, but he noticed the truth of the situation. He said nothing only because he wasn't sure he was right, he was willing to risk the possibility that Caine was being tortured over upsetting the others if he was wrong. It shows that Caine's life has lesser value to him than a 'regular' life. God, none of them truly respect or even acknowledge Caine's experience as a sentient being. The fic communicates this wonderfully: subtly through Kinger, way more straightforward through Zooble and especially Pomni. Those segments of Pomni's perspective hit hard. Cutting myself off here cause I've already written too much.
All this to say: incredible work from the author, I'm looking forward to the final chapter and any other works they decide to create. They've got some serious skill.
