Damian can feel his heart expanding and squeezing inside his chest and a new weight finds its way and settling there comfortably. He clutches the R symbol on his uniform and stares down at his boots.
He decides to continue on with patrol, trying to take up as little space as possible. Little does the smallest Robin know what a grave mistake that is.
OR
Tim Drake and Damian Wayne are captured during patrol. They are both compromised, with Damian in critical condition while being injected with fear toxin. No worries though, Batman is the world’s best detective, he will be here in no time. Right..?

The man’s eyes widen, recognition and something else- maybe fear?- flash through his eyes. Yet he can’t help the tremble in his words as he continues. “I need…I seek sanctuary…Father…” the world tilts, his knees buckling as his vision darkens. He thinks he hears his name, but nothing matters except blissful relief from the pain.

He grit his teeth and made no movement as his arms were struck again and again.
He lost count after twelve strikes, keeping his focus instead on not betraying his emotions or the pain he felt.
When it was over, Mother walked over to him and held his face in her hands. She smelled of that familiar scent of cinnamon and jade.
“I love you, My Alexander. Never forget that. You know I must do this to keep your grandfather from inflicting a greater punishment. Keep your head up, and I shall see you again. I trust that next time I visit, none of this shall be needed.”
“Yes, Mother.”
And with a breeze, she was gone.
Damian wasn’t foolish. He knew his mother had an ulterior motive for him being a part of the Wayne family. He still hoped that he would become close enough with them that they could help him stand up to her.
But he knows deep down that will never happen.

The hit resonates above the noise of the city. His head snaps to the side, eyes forced to the cracked concrete below. He can feel the blood beading where her ring has carved into his cheek and it stings under her touch but the vitriolic Arabic that so sharply rolls off her tongue right after cuts so much deeper.
"You are an only child, Ibn al Xu'ffasch."
Her nails dig into his jaw, forcing his head up to meet her eyes. "You have always been an only child. You'd do well to remember that."
A part of him resents her for calling him the sole heir. Splinters at the idea he was born alone. Another wonders if she is right. If he can even call himself a brother anymore when his is scattered, thousands of miles away, ashes in an unmarked grave.

AKA - Damian was a twin, once. But the League has no need for two heirs, and as far as he knows the Bat must only need one son. So when he is sent to live with his father, it is not merely blood relation that makes him refuse the idea of new family. Not that they know this.

Summary
In this universe, Damian Wayne is not raised in the League of Assassins. Instead, he grows up with the Wayne Family. He grows up alongside all of the bats, shielded from vigilantism and violence. With everyone holding the hopes that maybe he could have a chance at a normal, happy life.
But, on Damian's tenth birthday, over nine years after Talia gave him to the Waynes, the League of Assassins returns to take him back. And his family— despite all of their best efforts— are too late to save him.
The League spends the next four years shaping him and crafting him and manipulating him into the weapon he was always supposed to be.
And although the Waynes looks for him, following every lead, every trail, they find nothing.
Until four years later, when Damian Al Ghul is assigned Gotham City for his next mission.
Or: A what-if Damian's life was reversed. And instead of going from an Al Ghul to a Wayne, he goes from a Wayne to an Al Ghul. (And then back to a Wayne again. Some things- like family- are too powerful to be fully changed.)
