    Summary

The Knights’ cloaks are the color of an open wound against the walls of the atelier, their pennants like exposed bones. They look at him like Olruggio has committed a crime he cannot remember. Maybe he has.

They do not tell him who Qifrey is, even when he asks. They do not tell him much of anything.

Olruggio thinks he can figure it out from the empty space.

    Summary

He was met with the unamused stare of Beldaruit, long used to his antics and, in a rare feat, it was not one of his smoke sculptures but the man himself sitting in front of him.

“So dear child, enlighten me, how do you exactly plan to do that? Think about the risks! my dearest and only apprentice couldn’t possibly be thinking about doing something so—“ his voice had a tinge of incredulity, still not believing what Qifrey had boldly declared.

“Reasonable?” he interrupted. the quip left his mouth in a deadpan manner, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

Beldaruit spluttered, “Naive!” His professor’s lithe form deflated on his chair, thin hand dragging itself up to play with long silver locks. Qifrey knew he was thinking his words through, long accustomed to Beldaruit’s tells. His professor would give in— he knew it. A forlorn look could be seen on his face. “This is because of your third test, isn't it?" he uttered.

if Qifrey knew Beldaruit well, then Beldaruit knew him just the same. He was the only person he had in this damned hall after all.

Or: Qifrey finds out the truth and decides to take matters into his own hands.

    Summary

The girl fell to her knees. The witch turned their back. The body dangled over their shoulder, like a dead man. A dead man was what he was going to be, in this cruel, cruel world that begrudged making the slightest bit of room for him.

"No," Olruggio's voice broke with fear, "Let him go—"

The arms holding him suddenly went slack, and down among the stars, Olruggio fell.

In the aftermath of the upheaval, Olruggio tries to adapt. Some days the dead man is there to help, some days he isn't.
