Summary
Things are going pretty good for newly sixteen year old Pony Curtis. She has her best friend back, she's getting along with both of her brothers, and Darry might finally let her get a job. Sure, her brothers might be having more money trouble than usual, and maybe her feelings for her best friend aren't as normal as she would like, but she's working on it. But when a serial killer begins targeting girls like her around the city, her life and the lives of her family are once more thrown into chaos.

Summary
“I think he’s dead. I really think he's dead.”
The bomb in his heart explodes.
“What?” Darry exclaims, his grip on the telephone growing so tight he’s worried he might shatter the plastic. “Pony, who’s dead?”
“He was coming at me, Darry, and I don’t know--”
“Kiddo, you have to calm down. Who's dead?”
There’s a heavy pause. “I don't know. I don’t know, I don’t know.” Pony trails off with a shuddering exhale and another sniffle.
This does nothing to help the situation at hand. “Are you hurt?”
“Busted my lip. I think I’m okay,” he replies, his voice more calm but still shaken. “Darry, he had a gun.”
“Ponyboy! Next time, lead with that!” Darry roars, his eyes so wide he wonders if they’re falling out of his head. The headlights of their Ford light the living room momentarily, and Darry swallows hard. “Your brother just pulled in. Don’t move, you hear me?”

Summary
“Woah,” Darry says as he sits down across from Pony. Shit, here we go, Pony thinks. “You look awful.”
“Thanks,” he mumbles, trying to take a bite of his eggs to throw his brother off.
“Seriously,” Darry insists, his ice-blue eyes wide and worried. It makes Pony's stomach turn even more. “You look horrible. What's wrong? Are you sick?”
“No,” he's quick to reply, shaking his head. “I'm fine."
His brother doesn't believe him for even a second. “What's the matter?”
“Nothing, Darry, I'm just tired,” he tries. It sticks, just a bit. “Didn't really sleep.” That was true enough. He had spent most of the night trying not to cough and trying to wish his mother back to life.
Darry's eyes return to a normal size, but he still looks over him skeptically as he takes a long sip from his coffee. Pony knew there was no way in hell Darry couldn't hear him screaming at the top of his lungs last night, and he knew the nightmares freaked Darry out just as much as they scared him.
