In the midst of the ballroom, Lord Debling, with all the pomp of a man in earnest pursuit of a bride, dropped to one knee before Penelope. Colin, standing on the sidelines, felt the stirring urge to intervene should the proposal progress too far. But before he could make a move, a sharp voice rang out, cutting through the murmurs of the gathering.
